In social networks, the share of posts in Ukrainian increased: a new record

The share of posts by Ukrainians in Ukrainian on Instagram, X (Twitter) and Facebook reaches 56%. The tendency to strengthen the role of the Ukrainian language, which was recorded after the full-scale invasion, has been confirmed.

This is evidenced by the results of the research of the Center for Content Analysis, conducted on the occasion of the Day of the Ukrainian Language and Writing.

In 2020, social networks were dominated by Russian with 86% versus 14% of posts in Ukrainian. In 2022, the use of Ukrainian increased to 38%, and in 2023 – to 46%. This year, for the first time, the use of the Ukrainian language exceeded the use of the language of the aggressor country.

The leaders are Facebook, Instagram, X– here, Ukrainian-language content makes up 80–90%. Russian continues to dominate Russian social networks, which are most used in the occupied territories (VK and OK).

Languages ​​in social networks

Researchers recorded a slight increase in the use of the Ukrainian language on YouTube (where half of the content is still in Russian). There is also a decrease in the use of Ukrainian on TikTok (last year it was 55%, now it is 47%).

Content Analysis Center has conducted research for the fourth time. For the analysis, posts were collected from foreign social networks widespread in Ukraine, Facebook, Twitter (X), Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, including from the banned, but still used, Russian platforms VK and OK.

A total of 1.11 million posts were collected and analyzed, which were written between August 15 and September 15, 2024 by users who indicated Ukraine (or Ukrainian regions, including occupied) as their location in their profiles stay.
