In Finland, an unauthorized flight of a drone that crashed into a communication tower is being investigated

Finland's National Bureau of Investigation has launched an investigation into the fact that a drone flew near the headquarters of public broadcaster Yle.

According to law enforcement officers, the incident took place in the central-northern district of the Finnish capital, Pasila. The investigation concerns a person who launched a drone in the Yle airspace area, which requires a special permit.

At some point, the person involved in the investigation lost contact with the drone, and it crashed into a Digita communications tower. The device was removed by the employees of the company, which was contacted by the owner of the drone.

The investigation has previously established that the person involved had previously launched the drone near a local shopping center and a police station.

According to the detective-inspector of the National Bureau investigations of Finland Petri Partanen, a criminal complaint was registered under the article on espionage, since the activity took place near critical infrastructure facilities.

At the same time, as it follows from the case materials, the police consider the incident an accident. The suspect in the case is scheduled to be questioned in October, and the investigation is ongoing.

As Yle points out, espionage charges are rare in Finland: there have been only a few in recent years. The punishment for this crime is a minimum of one and a maximum of ten years of imprisonment.

Earlier it became known that a 32-year-old man was tried in Norway, who refused to pay a fine for violating the ban on launching drones during Volodymyr Zelenskyi's visit to Oslo in December 2023.
