In Canada, a diamond mine started producing 4.2 million kW of clean energy

A large solar power plant with a capacity of 3.5 MW will reduce greenhouse gas emissions and diesel fuel consumption at the mine.

< p>In Canada, mining company Rio Tinto is using a solar power plant to generate clean energy at one of the world's largest diamond mines, Diavik. About it writes Interesting Engineering.

It is reported that Rio Tinto has installed a solar power plant with a capacity of 3.5 MW at a mine in the northwestern part of Canada. The project includes 6,620 panels and is the country's largest stand-alone solar power plant.

The plant is expected to generate 4.2 million kWh of solar energy per year and reduce the mine's diesel consumption by one million liters per year. . In addition, the station should reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 2,900 tons of CO2 equivalent. This can be compared to removing 630 cars from the roads every year.

As noted in the publication, at the end of 2026 the Diavik mine will expire. It will take another three years to close the mine. During this time, the plant will provide up to 25% of the mine's electricity, using sunlight as well as light reflected from the snow.

The mine's chief operating officer, Matthew Breen, said the installation of the solar plant — this is another environmental protection initiative of the company, designed to increase energy efficiency.
