Apple plans to release its first foldable tablet in 2028. It is described as something like a giant iPad that folds out to the size of two iPad Pros placed side by side. This is reported by 9to5mac.
Rumors of an Apple foldable device have been circulating for years, but Apple has finally settled on a single product that it will release in a few years. The company wants to avoid creases on its devices, and that was a big focus during development. The crease is now almost invisible, but Apple hasn't completely eliminated it yet:
Prototypes of this new product in Apple's industrial design group have a nearly invisible crease. But it's too early to say whether Apple will be able to do away with it altogether. Samsung, which released its first foldable phone five years ago, has tried unsuccessfully to eliminate the crease.
When unfolded, the display will likely measure about 20 inches or so. The foodie describes it as “a single, solid piece of glass.” It is also described as a “high-end device”.
Apparently, Apple has focused its foldable strategy on creating much larger screens that will fit in a backpack, rather than offering a less than comfortable tablet.
Speaking of the operating system, Gurman suggests that the product will most likely run on a version of iPadOS. However, there is one interesting detail. “I don't believe it will be a true iPad-Mac hybrid, but the device will have elements of both. By 2028, iPadOS should be advanced enough to run macOS apps,” he added.
It's unclear whether this is just Gurman's speculation, but the possibility of running Mac apps on this foldable iPad (and potentially other iPads) is very interesting! As for foldable iPhones, the company is exploring the idea.
