The Finnish government expects the Turkish parliament to ratify Finland's NATO membership on Tuesday or Wednesday. This is what foreign and security policy sources say.

After that, the approval of all 30 NATO member countries for Finland's accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization is gathered.

The Hungarian Parliament made the ratification in its session on Monday.

Finland will become a NATO member. full member after signature and letter drum.

Ratification documents must be signed in both Hungary and Turkey. After that, the countries deliver the papers by diplomatic post to Washington, where the US State Department deposits them in its vaults.

The papers are transported by scheduled flights, so their arrival in Washington depends on the flight arrangements of the Hungarian and Turkish diplomats.

For example, in previous cases, Greece and Portugal did not deliver the ratification documents of Finland's NATO membership to Washington very quickly. On the other hand, they were not the last countries to ratify.

The Greek parliament ratified Finland's NATO membership on September 15, 2022. The country deposited the papers in the vault in Washington on October 14, i.e. a month later.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken signed on the 17 October notification that the deposit had taken place. The US State Department delivered this so-called notification letter about the Greek deposit to NATO headquarters in Brussels.

The letter was carried by an American diplomat traveling on a scheduled flight.

The Portuguese parliament will ratify Finland's NATO membership on September 16, 2022. The Lusitanians deposited the papers in a vault in Washington on October 11, and Blinken signed the notification letter about the deposit on the same day.

Pressure for speed

For the ratifications of Hungary and Turkey, according to foreign and security policy sources, there is pressure for faster deposits than in the case of Greece and Portugal.

At the earliest, the deposits could take place this week, but they will probably take a little more time.

The United States plans to sign the notification papers immediately and immediately forward them to the NATO Secretary General To Jens Stoltenberg.

When Stoltenberg has 30 declarations of ratification signed by Blinken in Brussels, the Secretary General invites Finland to become a member of NATO. The invitation is sent by a formal letter, which will be received in Helsinki by the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Who will take the letter?

After this, the letter rush culminates: the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs will deliver the republic to Washington Finland's own accession decision signed by President Sauli Niinistö.

Let's take the paper to Washington. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not yet decided who will deliver the historical paper.

In the US capital, Finland's accession decision is deposited in the vaults of the State Department. Once this deposit has been made, Finland will be a member of NATO and protected by the security guarantees of Article 5.
