The former technical director of the UANL Tigres, Miguel “Piojo” Herrera, revealed this Thursday that “people from Mexican National Team” told him that his name will always be a “common denominator” on the table between candidates to lead the national team, because despite being dismissed for a disciplinary issue, he had good results.

However, he clarified that his idea is not in the Aztec team, because Gerardo “Tata” Martino has a contract and a World Cup to play in the next few days. This is what he said in an interview with ESPN:

“The people of Mexican Selection told me 'since you came out of the selection, your name will always be a common denominator at the table, you will always be with the candidates.' I've heard a lot that Gerardo Martino is leaving when the World Cup is over. Of course (he would like the position). I reiterate, the results did not remove me from the selection either”

“You have to land ideas well and my idea is not in the Mexican National Team. There is a coach, a World Cup to play and think about that great satisfaction of reaching the quarterfinals, in that fifth game and thinking further. Then the president of the federation will have the problem”, he said.

Despite the above, El Piojo acknowledged that among his aspirations is returning to the Tri bench for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place jointly between the United States, Mexico  and Canada.

Regarding the Mexican National Team that will play Qatar 2022, Miguel Herrera expects the “click” between players and el Tata, well, “There is a great team, with kids who can 'kill' each other on the pitch to get it.”

“At first, that integration was very cool, a year and a half that excited everyone, and then I don't know what happened. Results began that we don't like, more victories than defeats, but very important defeats, which hurt. That's why doubts come, “he stressed.

On the other hand, the also former coach of América expressed that it is not the best time to take Raúl Jiménez to Qatar 2022, since the striker for England's Wolverhampton is not fully fit due to pubalgia in the who is recovering, and considers it a mistake to leave out the striker for Feyenoord of the Netherlands, Santiago Giménez, the current top scorer in the Europa League despite the fact that he records few minutes on the pitch.

“I wouldn't leave anyone out, I would leave all four of them,” said Herrera about Gerardo Martino's decision to only carry three forward centers and that will leave out Raúl Jiménez, Henry Martín, Rogelio Funes Mori or Santiago Giménez.
