In a statement sent to Radio-Canada, former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig once again rejects the allegations of spying by his ex-detainee in China, Michael Spavor.

The latter alleges that he gave information on North Korea to Mr. Kovrig, who, in turn, passed it on to intelligence agencies.

According to the Globe and Mail, this would be the origin of China's accusations of espionage in the x27;location of these two Canadian nationals.

In his statement sent to Radio-Canada, Mr. Kovrig emphasizes that he has always worked according to the laws and regulations that govern the profession of diplomat and that he has always been transparent in his activities when he was stationed in China from 2014 to 2016.

The ex-diplomat explains that before his arrest in 2018, the Chinese authorities had never informed him that his work could constitute a problem. He adds that he was regularly invited to meetings with Chinese diplomats, analysts or academics.

After leaving Canadian diplomacy, Mr. .Kovrig joined the International Crisis Group, an organization that works to prevent conflict, in 2017.

Within that organization, Mr. Kovrig says he attempted to work with Chinese authorities to get the North Koreans to stop developing and contributing to the proliferation of nuclear weapons and missile technologies. ballistics.

Returning to his detention in China, Mr. Kovrig said indicated that it categorically rejected all Chinese allegations.

Although I was subjected to months of detention, coercion, interrogation, psychological torture, loneliness and uncertainty, I always maintained my innocence upon my arrest and again during my trial. I continue to do so today.

Last March, Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig received a ovation in the House of Commons.

Mr. Kovrig points out that reports in Chinese media that he confessed to charges fabricated by the Chinese government before [his] release are completely false.

China wrongly detained me as a political hostage as part of blackmail against the Government of Canada. To suggest that I was detained for any other reason is false and only amplifies the propaganda of the Chinese government.

On November 18, the Globe and Mailreported that Mr. Spavor would demand millions of dollars from Ottawa for having been detained in China.

Confidential sources have confirmed to the newspaper that negotiations are underway in Toronto between Michael Spavor's lawyers and the Canadian ministries of Justice and Foreign Affairs.

Michael Spavor and Michael Kovrig found themselves at the heart of a diplomatic-judicial saga following the arrest of the financial director of Chinese telecoms giant Huawei, Meng Wanzhou, in December 2018, at the request of American authorities.

The two Canadians spent more than 1,000 days in Chinese prisons, before being repatriated to country in 2021.
