The most powerful hurricane in a century – “Milton” – approached the US coast. It was initially classified as a Category 5 storm, but weakened as it made landfall.

At least 11 people were killed as the hurricane spawned tornadoes across Florida, officials said on Oct. 10.

The hurricane moved over the state late Wednesday night before barreling into the Atlantic Ocean. The storm knocked down trees, power lines and destroyed the roof of the baseball stadium. About three million homes and businesses were without power.

According to local authorities, five people died in St. Lucie County, three in Volusia County, two in St. Petersburg and one in Tampa. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters that the deaths were caused by tornadoes caused by the hurricane.

As reported in the media, on Wednesday the National Meteorological Service released 126 tornado warnings across the state, which is the most number of warnings in one calendar day in the entire history of observations, starting in 1986.

The US National Hurricane Center announced around 2 a.m. GMT , that after reaching the mainland, hurricane “Milton” weakened somewhat and was transferred to the second category, and later – to the first. The maximum wind speed is 150 km/h.
