Hungary Prepares for 'Flood of the Decade' on Danube by Strengthening Dams

Hungary is preparing for a major flood on the Danube, with high water from other Central European countries approaching the Hungarian part.

This is reported by 444.hu, writes European Pravda.

Prime Minister Viktor Orban filmed a special video message, stating that the place where he is standing may already be under water the next day and the water level will exceed his height, and then rise even more.

“But water experts are very confident that the highest water levels this week will not exceed historical records. They say that if we managed that flood, we can manage less,” he said.

The areas most at risk, he said, are the capital Budapest, the Danube bend north of Budapest and Szigetköz in the west of the country.

Orban assured that the rescue services have everything they need, and the main person responsible for the response to the natural disaster will be the Minister of the Interior.

On the morning of September 16, a representative of the National Water Administration said that the flooding could develop in different ways, depending on how long heavy rainfall continues in Austria. According to him, the maximum water level on the Danube should be about 40 cm below the absolute record of 2013 – that is, 8.9 meters.

Services have begun to publish information about dams and other places where volunteers are needed to fill bags and make other preparations.

The Minister of Defense announced that the army will also join the response to the natural disaster. About 12 thousand people will be involved, and amphibious tracked vehicles will be deployed to areas where flooding is expected.

Earlier, the mayor of Budapest warned of the approaching “flood of the decade.”

As is known, southwestern Poland, eastern Czech Republic and Lower Austria are suffering from large-scale flooding, at least three people are known to have died.
