How to make Ukrainian schools "cycling friendly": tips from U-Cycle

NGO “Association of Cyclists of Kyiv” (U-Cycle) formulated recommendations for creating “cycling-friendly” schools with bicycle and educational infrastructure.

These are recommendations for state institutions involved in the reconstruction of Ukraine. Read the details on the U-Cycle website.

The recommendations of the “Association of Cyclists of Ukraine” take into account European practices and the experience of implementing the national campaign “Bicycle to school”, which took place in 2021-2024 .

Promoting sustainable mobility and improving road safety for children and youth in Ukraine, which was implemented by U-Cycle together with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and international partners ChildFund Deutschland, the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany and the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Ukraine.

” Bicycle-friendly schools/U-Cycle

The European Union adopted the European Declaration on Bicycle Transport on April 3, 2024. The declaration defined the following obligations:

  • safe and coordinated bicycle networks in cities;
  • better connections with public transport;
  • safe places for parking bicycles;
  • access to recharging for electric bicycles.

Recommendations regarding the hard component (infrastructure):

1. Installation and provision of schools with modern bicycle infrastructure:

  • covered bicycle parking for long-term storage of bicycle transport of students and school employees;
  • bicycle maintenance station (veloSTO ) and/or a set of tools for repairing the bicycles of students and school staff;
  • training bicycles, helmets, etc. for conducting lessons on bicycle safety.

2. Arrangement of an educational interactive site on traffic safety on the school territory for conducting practical classes on educational subjects and programs “Basics of health”, the variable module “Cycling”, the course “Health, safety and well-being”, etc.

Recommendations for the soft component (education and promotion):

1. Implementation of school educational programs on bicycle safety and the use of modern educational materials for teachers and students

Online platform “Bike to school”, which includes:

  • a guide for bike mentors (teachers, bicycle activists, police representatives, parents, etc.) that can be used for lesson plans;
  • a workbook for students;
  • animated educational videos on bicycle safety;
  • Rules of the road for cyclists with illustrations and other educational materials.

Online course >“How to become a bicycle mentor: all about bicycles and traffic safety”, which has already been completed by more than 1,000 teachers, police officers, bicycle activists and parents of children from various cities and communities of Ukraine.

< 2. Implementation and conducting of educational and promotional activities and practices on an ongoing basis:

  • cycling festivals on traffic safety;
  • all-Ukrainian challenge “Bicycle March”, etc.
