According to the data of the all-Ukrainian survey of the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KMIS), the popularity of alternative practices among Ukrainians is gaining new dimensions.

Results of the survey highlight the attitude of citizens to astrology, tarology and psychic abilities, which has important consequences for understanding modern trends in society.

According to the study:

  • 35% of Ukrainians believe in astrology,
  • 25% believe in psychic abilities,
  • while 15% believe in tarology.

These practices find their supporters among both women and men, with a higher rate among women – 49% compared to 36% among men.

Interest in alternative practices is growing among older population groups and respondents with low level of prosperity. For example, 51% of respondents aged 60+ believe in at least one of the practices, compared to 26% of those aged 30 and over. Among high-net-worth individuals, only 34% believe in these aspects, compared to 65% among those with very low incomes.

Sociologists explain this interest as a reaction to crisis and psychologically difficult periods, which contribute to the growth of interest in alternative practices. For example, in November 2023, 66% of Ukrainians reported worsening mental health after a full-scale invasion.

The results of the study reflect the growing interest of Ukrainians in alternative practices, which may reflect changes in society and people's needs for new forms of self-expression and support.

The survey, which took place from February 17 to March 5, 2024, involved 2,008 adult Ukrainians and is an important source for understanding the dynamics of beliefs and values of Ukrainian society.
