While travelers will soon have to spend three days in the hotel to do a supervised quarantine, hoteliers are still waiting to know how it will go.

“Currently, I have the impression that we are at an altitude of 3,500 feet with the Prime Minister [du Canada, Justin Trudeau] and the people around him, but I think we will have to land on a clear directive for hoteliers, ”said the chairman of the board of directors of the Association hôtellerie Québec (AHQ), Dany Thibault.
On Friday, Trudeau announced new restrictive measures to limit the risk of the coronavirus spreading when returning travelers who have stayed abroad.
In addition to taking a drug test at the airport, they will soon have to stay at least three days in a hotel, for around $ 2,000, while awaiting their results.
For the moment, the government has not indicated when these measures will begin.
However, the new Federal Minister of Transport, Omar Alghabra, has hinted that the requirement for all travelers to pass through the hotel when returning to Canada could come into effect as early as Thursday, when he appears on the show. Rosemary Barton Live on CBC Sunday.
For Dany Thibault, it is absolutely necessary that the government announces the color quickly.
“The problem is not the lack of availability, because there are lots of places. But there is still a protocol to put in place to ensure that our employees are well protected and then that it is orchestrated in an optimal and fluid way, ”explains the Chairman of the AHQ Board of Directors.
Currently having very low occupancy rates ranging from 5 to 6%, hoteliers will also have to organize themselves to recall staff who could have been laid off.
“We will have to turn around, but within 72 hours, just to put the procedures in place and recall employees, it will be difficult. We need at least three days for us to get organized, ”thinks Mr. Thibault.
Who pays the bill?
But what also worries hoteliers is the lack of information surrounding the amount of $ 2,000 that travelers will have to pay for the three days of mandatory quarantine at the hotel. The costs must cover, among other things, those of the hotel, meals and the screening test.
“Is it the government that passes the bill to the customer and that we bill the government?” But if not, if I have a client who has no money and who is not able to pay us, what do we do? Asks Mr. Thibault.
