The future fashion designer was born in Hamburg on September 10, 1933 in the family of a large entrepreneur, the owner of a condensed milk factory, Otto Lagerfeld, who made a considerable fortune on the supply of canned milk to Europe.
From an early age, Karl was fond of foreign languages, reading and music. The future fashion designer received a good education in the area that interested him since childhood – design art. In 1953, he moved with his mother to Paris, where he attended school under the High Fashion Syndicate. In 1954 he received the First Prize of the Fashion Designers Competition. In 1955 he won the First Prize for Coat Design in a competition organized by the International Wool Secretariat. Then he became an assistant to the French fashion designer Pierre Balmain, with whom he worked until 1958.
In 1963, Karl began working with four fashion houses at once – Chloe, Fendi, Krizia, Charles Laurdan, creating completely different collections for each of them. From 1983 until his death, Lagerfeld headed the House of Chanel.

The legendary fashion designer almost never spoke about his personal life, even simply because he did not like to do it. He was not married, no children. After his death from AIDS in 1989, his life partner, Jacques de Bascher, lived alone. When asked about his personal life after the death of his beloved, he said: “My love is in the grave, this is all over. I have already reached the age when it is simply indecent to discuss personal life.”
