Fatal accident in Warsaw
A dramatic accident occurred on Friday after 5 p.m. near the intersection of Ordona and Jana Kazimierza streets in Warsaw. The boy was fatally hit while crossing the street. The perpetrator fled the scene. The suspect was apprehended late Saturday evening.
The prosecutor's office charged the man with causing a fatal accident, fleeing the scene, and failing to comply with a court order prohibiting him from driving. It also filed a motion with the court to apply temporary arrest to the man.
The prosecutor’s office justified the use of the preventive measure with the fear that the 43-year-old suspect in the case might be lying or hiding. The grounds for applying the arrest are also the high penalty for the acts Andrzej K. is charged with. The man could be imprisoned for up to 20 years.
The court decided to arrest Andrzej K.
“The District Court of Warsaw – Wola in Warsaw accepted the prosecutor's request and applied a preventive measure in the form of temporary arrest for a period of three months to the perpetrator of the fatal accident of January 3, 2025 – Andrzej K.” – informed the District Prosecutor's Office in Warsaw on Tuesday, January 7.
The suspect was drunk at the time of his arrest. He had about 2 per mille of alcohol in his body. During the interrogation, Andrzej K. allegedly admitted to the acts he was accused of. He also gave an explanation, indicating that he was not aware that an accident had occurred. After the accident, he drove outside Warsaw, where he hid the vehicle. He was also supposed to have been drinking alcohol with a member of his family.
The prosecutor's office announced that it will verify the suspect's statements with the material collected so far.
