The United States will not ease its pressure on Israel and Arab leaders to reach an agreement on the hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza, Vice President Kamala Harris said in an interview published Sunday, October 6, Agence France-Presse reports.

Washington is working with Israel on the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza residents and the “need to reach a deal that frees the hostages and leads to a ceasefire.”

“And “We are not going to stop putting pressure on Israel and the entire region, including Arab leaders,” Harris said in an interview with CBS that is set to air in full on Monday.

Referring to the Iranian missile attack on Israel, Harris stressed that “we have an obligation to do everything we can to ensure that Israel can defend itself against this kind of attack.”

Israel is on high alert ahead of Monday's anniversary of the unprecedented Oct. 7 Hamas attack that sparked the war in Gaza.

Israel has now turned its attention to Hezbollah, Hamas's Iranian-backed ally in Lebanon, and has promised Tehran retaliation for the recent missile attack.

Asked by a CBS reporter whether the U.S. views Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “real, close ally,” Harris said “the better question is, “Is there a significant alliance between the American and Israeli peoples? And the answer to this question is yes.”
