The EU Commission has been trying for weeks to gloss over the vaccination debacle – now the collar of the first Federal Minister is bursting!
Interior Minister Horst Seehofer goes harder than ever on Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen and Health Commissioner Stella Kyriakides (64).
“That’s enough,” Seehofer told BILD: “
The EU Commission has made enough mistakes when ordering vaccines in the last few months.”
Von der Leyen and Kyriakides have been defending their course for weeks when it comes to vaccine procurement, which is far too slow and too late. In the middle of the week, von der Leyen simply said: “We were late for approval.”
Dissatisfaction in the EU Parliament too
Seehofer is also furious about the Commission’s request to allow exceptions to the controls at the borders with Austria and the Czech Republic (from Sunday), including for commuters. “We are fighting the mutated virus on the border with the Czech Republic and Austria.
The EU Commission should support us and not throw clubs between our legs with cheap advice, ”said Seehofer.
The re is also resentment in the EU Parliament. According to BILD information, the budget committee offered von der Leyen 1.5 billion euros at the beginning of last week to accelerate vaccine production.
The head of the commission did not react to this, according to participants at the meeting.
The committee bosses Johan van Overtveldt (65) and Monika Hohlmeier (58, CSU) then sent a letter to Kyriakides last Monday and renewed their offer.
“In the current race against time, it is the effective way to invest quickly and collectively in vaccines and the health system,” it says. “That is the least that our citizens expect.”
“In any case, it is not due to the greed of the EU Parliament”
A Commission spokesman said the proposal would now be discussed with the EU Council. It is therefore “no immediate decision or answer to Parliament possible”.
Party friends von der Leyens see it differently and urge more speed.
The EPP budget expert Niclas Herbst (47) on BILD: “I expect the EU Commission to take every euro to additionally accelerate the production of vaccines and to advance research for vaccines against the mutants. In any case, it is not due to the greed of the EU Parliament. “
