Hannes Leopoldseder, the former director of ORF in Upper Austria, has died. He headed the ORF Landesstudios in Linz for 24 years and was not only a co-founder of Ars Electronica and the Linz Klangwolke, but was also particularly committed to the regionalization of ORF reporting.

“Hannes Leopoldseder was a figurehead for our house. He headed our house for over 20 years and was a guarantee for exemplary journalism. Leopoldseder has established ORF Upper Austria as a constant in the Upper Austrian and Austrian media scene. In addition, he was a visionary and dealt with digital development early on in the 80s, ”said State Director Kurt Rammerstorfer in an initial reaction.
Died of consequences of a Covid 19 disease
Born in St. Leonhard near Freistadt and raised in Weitersfelden, Hannes Leopoldseder graduated from the Episcopal Gymnasium Petrinum in Linz and studied English and German in Vienna. In 1967 he became an editor for the current service of ORF television. In 1974 he became ORF regional director in Upper Austria and remained in this position until 1998. His last four years of service at ORF until 2002, Leopoldseder worked as information director in Vienna. From 2008 he taught Ars Electronica and since 2009 he has been an honorary professor at the Linz Art University.
The 80-year-old died on Friday evening as a result of a Covid 19 disease in Linz.

ORF General Director Dr. Alexander Wrabetz: “Dr. Hannes Leopoldseder was a great innovator in the media scene. For almost a quarter of a century he was at the helm of the Upper Austria regional studio and made it a model regional studio through significant impulses for regionalization. Under his aegis, at a time when terms such as internet and social media did not yet exist, he created globally recognized trade marks with the Ars Electronica Festival and the Prix Ars Electronica competition, which have made a significant contribution to our country’s international reputation. As the information director of the ORF, he pushed for a massive expansion of event-related information and thus made ORF information fit for the 21st century. The ORF mourns with his family and will always keep Hannes Leopoldseder an honorable memory. “
Vater des Ars Electronica Festivals
Hannes Leopoldseder became the father of Ars Electronica – without him this festival for digital future visions, which was held for the first time in 1979, would not have existed. In doing so, he has given Linz and Upper Austria a high reputation far beyond the cultural scene. The ORF Friedenslicht was also developed during his time as director. During his chairmanship of the Upper Austrian Provincial Cultural Advisory Board, the Festival of the Regions was launched in 1993.
Discoverers and promoters
In addition, he had an excellent eye for journalism. A number of well-known ORF employees such as Tarek Leitner and Hans Bürger were discovered and promoted by him.
The sincere sympathy of the entire ORF Upper Austria team goes to all bereaved families.
