Halla Tómasdóttir elected new President of Iceland

On Sunday, June 2, 55-year-old businesswoman Halla Tomasdottir won the presidential election.

The candidate received 33.9% of the votes, beating her rival, former head of government Katrin Jakobsdottir, who received 25 %, report Fakty.com.ua.

According to the National Election Commission, these elections featured the highest turnout in Iceland since 1996 — 80.8% of citizens took part in them.

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky has already congratulated his Icelandic counterpart.

At home, the politician thanked Thomasdottir for her strong position in support Ukraine.

— I look forward to working together to strengthen the Ukrainian-Icelandic partnership, as well as to ensure a just and lasting peace in Europe and beyond— indicated by the head of state.

Zelensky wished Halla Tomasdottir successful and fruitful work in her new post.
