No more country, yodeling and the cowboy hat. Guylaine Tanguay temporarily put back his repertoire, the time to borrow the airs of Céline Dion, Ginette Reno or even Charles Aznavour, with My way, a new virtual show with a very specific goal: to bring a little comfort in these times of pandemic.
Guylaine Tanguay does not hide it: she felt “a little down ” lately. Deprived of stage – her hobby – for a while already because of sanitary measures, the singer begins to find the time long, far from the boards and his audience.
“I need to sing. At the moment, we don’t know when or how we’ll be able to start giving shows again. It’s a mourning that is very difficult to do, ”says Guylaine Tanguay.
And the singer knows full well that she is not the only one for whom the prolonged effects of containment and the pandemic – paired with blues winter – are starting to be felt.
It is therefore from this perspective – that of doing good – that she set up this new project. Of course, she wants to bring herself and her musicians a little comfort and gentleness. But she is also convinced thatMy way will have the same effect on its viewers.
“I wanted to pay myself a trip that was going to do me good. But it also had to please people. They’ve been writing to me on social media for a long time to tell me that they like to hear me sing something other than country, whether it’s at Belle and Bum or at the gala Celebration, for example. So I know that this show, it will cheer us all up, ”she says.
” Respectfully “
Yep, you read that right. Guylaine Tanguay will move away here from country, her favorite genre. But first-time fans can rest assured: his country roots still remain firmly rooted. We can therefore certainly detect certain influences, perceptible, but discreet.
The arrangements have, after all, been revised to allow the singer to put her voice comfortably.
“We transform those songs, but it’s done with a lot of respect. You can’t denature them anyway. You have to conserve gasoline, ”she explains.
On the program, therefore, re-readings borrowed from Quebec divas Céline Dion and Ginette Reno, like others, popularized by immortals of French song, namely Jacques Brel, Charles Aznavour and Michel Sardou.
But no question of going digging in their directories to find the pearl hidden among the obscure and unknown titles. Guylaine Tanguay prioritized the Bohemian, The essential or For you to love me again. In short, the inevitable successes.
“We stay in the headlines. I wanted the references to be easy, immediate, to be songs that everyone knows. No need to look far, we recognize them after a few notes, ”says Guylaine Tanguay.
Because what the singer wants is to evoke – both at home and in the audience – memories, these powerful antidotes to the gloom of pandemic daily life. Because there is nothing wrong with taking refuge, if only momentarily, in the sweetness of past happy events.
“We often say how important it is to live in the present moment. But right now, that can get heavy. Memories are worth gold. Especially at the moment, ”she says.
