< p>UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for reparations for the transatlantic trade in enslaved people, reports Reuters.

In his opinion, this should help overcome the legacy of the slave trade in modern society, including systemic racism.

The agency reported that from the 15th to the 19th centuries, at least 12.5 million Africans were kidnapped, forcibly taken by European traders on European ships and sold into slavery.

Survivors of this brutal journey to ended up working on plantations in the Americas, mainly in Brazil and the Caribbean, while others profited from their labor.

In a statement on the International Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Slavery, Guterres noted that the events of the past " laid the foundation for a system of violent discrimination based on white supremacy.”

“We call for a framework for reparations justice to overcome generations of exclusion and discrimination.” &ndash ; Guterres said.
