The president of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, summoned the military forces of the region to unite to combat organized crime.

In the midst of the commemoration of the heroic deed of the Cordillera del Cóndor in 1981 and the anniversary of the victory in Cenepa, in 1995, by the President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso , called on the countries and security forces of the region to unite to combat drug trafficking, organized crime and illegal mining, which, according to the president, cause a setback in the development and prosperity of societies.

For Lasso, transnational crime operated by international mafias works with the “complicity of bad politicians and governments.” This type of ties has allowed members of organized crime to infiltrate the institutional structures of the State.

According to the Ecuadorian president, law enforcement is currently facing new scourges such as drug trafficking, organized crime and illegal mining, which want to “erode democracy, intimidate citizens and the government, and penetrate society with the unfortunate cooperation of some bad authorities, officials and even judicial operators”.

In his speech, Lasso highlighted the need to establish lines of joint work between law enforcement and gave the cooperation between Ecuador and Colombia as an example: “We must lay the foundations to achieve increasingly effective military cooperation , as we are currently doing between Ecuador and Colombia”.

At the end of 2022, military representatives from both countries met to define a joint strategy to protect the shared border.

The President of Ecuador, Guillermo Lasso, referred to the new challenges faced by the Armed Forces at a military ceremony held in Quito.

Under this scenario, Lasso stated: “it is essential that the countries and law enforcement in the region, let us be allies to combat these true armies of evil”.

For the Ecuadorian president, the role of the Armed Forces must be refocused in the face of the new threats and he assured that for this purpose the government is processing a proposal for a constitutional amendment before Congress to allow the participation of the military forces in the fight against organized crime: “This is not a matter of the government, we are talking, without exaggeration, about the security of Ecuadorian society and the risk that the underworld empire will take over our country,” he said.

For his part, the Defense Minister, Luis Lara, was emphatic when declaring: “The Armed Forces reiterate their respect and obedience to the Constitution and principles that govern republican life; their fidelity to the sacred oath to defend the country and its territorial sovereignty”. To this he added: “we are willing to provide complementary support to the National Police in the fight against violence in the terms provided by the Constitution and the laws in the area of ​​our powers, without neglecting our fundamental mission. We will be respectful of the mandate of the citizens at the polls, of the decisions of the National Assembly and of the Executive branch”.

At the military ceremony, Lasso also referred to the advances in cooperation between Ecuador and Peru since the signing of the Peace, which happened when Jamil Mahuad and Alberto Fujimori led, in 1998, both countries, respectively: “We have made progress in friendship and cooperation ties to solve common problems (…). We have worked for the development of our citizens, but also for regional and South American integration. And so we will continue to do so for the well-being of millions of people.”

The military act took place at the Eloy Alfaro Military Superior School in Quito, where “the patriotic fervor and the spirit of National Unity”, as reported by the Press Secretary of the Presidency.

In his speech, Lasso highlighted that “these are historical facts that fill the Armed Forces with glory Ecuadorian Armed Forces and the entire country (…). All regions, political parties, students and workers, men and women, we unite for a common cause: to defend our beloved country.” Likewise, the president highlighted the courage and heroism of the soldiers who offered their lives for the Ecuadorian flag and promised to strengthen the capacities of the country's military forces.
