A few weeks ago, we learned that Rockstar Games feared that the launch of GTA 6 would be disrupted by an unfortunate trend that is spreading more and more: review bombing, or when players give bad ratings to a game en masse to express their dissatisfaction. This fear could well be justified, if it turns out that the sequel to GTA 5offers an exorbitant price. The rumors about it are already numerous, but this time, there is really something to worry about.
gta 6: worrying rumors
Since the sublime trailer urgently put online by Rockstar Games following a leak eight months ago, the New York studio has been very discreet around GTA 6. Expected for 2025, the title is one of the most hyped of all time, and players are therefore waiting for it at the turn. The slightest leak, the slightest rumor, is scrutinized, analyzed, dissected. But if a lot of official or unofficial information is reassuring, others have something to worry about. This is particularly the case with regard to the price of the game. The wildest rumors about it have set the internet ablaze, with the price of 150 euros even being mentioned for a while!
More recently, a price that could be around 100 euros has also been mentioned. So, should we expect to have to break the bank to play the long-awaited GTA 6? It is in any case a possibility not to be taken lightly, according to a developer from Larian Studio (Baldur's Gate 3).
Will the next game from Rockstar Games be the most expensive in history?
This week, Michael Douse, publishing director of Baldur’s Gate 3, took to his X account to tackle Star Wars Outlaws. As a reminder, the Ubisoft game will officially be released this Friday, August 30, but purchasing the Ultimate editionat 130 euros has allowed the biggest spenders to play it for a few days already, while taking advantage of various bonuses. For Douse, this exorbitant price is not justified. In his eyes, justifying such a price with a seasonal pass and “artificial” bonuses is at the same time “dangerous and disconnected from the community”.
Still, Michael Douse isn't against raising the base price of video games,“because the cost of creating them (inflation, for example) is outpacing [old] pricing trends.” Not all games should be treated the same, though, and the developer who worked on Baldur's Gate 3 thinks everyone should be “be priced according to its quality, breadth and depth.”.
This is obviously where the case of GTA 6 is put on the table, becauseRockstar's title will be part of a new category of games that is becoming more democratic: AAAA, or very, very big budget games. While the price of video games has increased in recent years, particularly with prices that can reach 80 euros for “basic” editions, Douse is categorical: if there is one game capable of setting a new standard in terms of price, it is the next Grand Theft Auto.“Everyone is just waiting for GTA 6 to do it,” he confides, implying that other publishers could follow in Rockstar Games' footsteps. Unfortunately for gamers' wallets, this is the direction the video game industry seems to be heading, with more and more industry figures claiming that prices need to be raised. And you, what price would you be willing to pay to play GTA 6?
