Canadians interested in taking advantage of the federal Greener Homes Grant have just two weeks left to apply.

< p class="StyledBodyHtmlParagraph-sc-48221190-4 hnvfyV">In a press release, the Ministry of Natural Resources announced that it was adjusting the program.

Precisely because of the success of the program, the government will have to stop 'accept new requests within two weeks to prepare for the transition to the new phase of the Initiative, it is indicated.

This next phase will provide financial assistance that will be more accessible to low-to-median income households, those who most need to reduce their energy bills.

Details on the next step have not been revealed. Those who have already applied under the Canadian Greener Homes Initiative will, however, have their submission processed according to the ministry.

The federal government is also keeping the interest-free loan program for energy-efficient renovations as well as the program for converting from fuel oil to heat pumps.

The hundreds of thousands of necessary energy assessments will take their course as planned for the entire duration of the program, specifies the press release. Many energy assessment companies have expressed concern about the end of the program and the consequences for their future.

The federal grant began in May 2021 and was expected to remain in place until 2027. It allows Canadians to get up to $5,000 for installations of solar panels, heat pumps, windows and other renovations that improve the energy efficiency of a house.

It also reimburses up to $600 for mandatory energy assessments before and after the work.

In November, however, Natural Resources Minister Jonathan Wilkinson indicated that the popularity of the Initiative was depleting funding for the program faster than expected.

In Ontario, the company Enbridge Gas which managed the federal Initiative in partnership with other provincial grants already suspended new applications in January.

According to the government, nearly 525,000 applications have been submitted and around 165,000 grants have been paid.
