Worried about the “genocidal campaign” waged against the Uighurs, a Muslim minority in China, the Green Party of Canada proposes nothing less than to hold the Beijing 2022 Winter Games in Canada.
“There is very credible evidence that the Chinese government is committing genocide against the Uighur people”, recalled by press release the leader of the Greens, Annamie Paul, stressing that Canadian and American parliamentarians both agree to speak of “genocide “.
In doing so, Mme Paul would like the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to consider withdrawing the organization of the Olympic Games from China and for Canada to offer to take over.
“As the host country of the 2010 Winter Olympics, Canada has many intact and operational venues,” said the politician, pleading that the facilities for the Vancouver Games, held in 2010, are still available.
“It would be a Herculean task, but it deserves to be studied. These are the kinds of creative solutions for which Canada was recognized and can be recognized again. This solution would allow us to make a significant contribution to the international community as a unifying country, even as a middle power, ”added Annamie Paul, arguing that it might also be possible to co-organize the Winter Games with the United States.
About 20 personalities and politicians from all parties represented in the Commons signed an open letter on Saturday in which they urged the IOC not to organize the Games in China.
The Canadian Olympic Committee, however, does not intend to boycott the Beijing Games and argues that participating can help promote Canadian values.
