Green energy is being used by more and more countries. It provides a significant amount of all the energy used in Europe.
In 2024, renewable sources provided 47% of the electricity produced in the European Union, which is 1,300 kilowatt hours in absolute terms. This is reported by 24 Channel with reference to the European Electricity Review 2025 report published by the British analytical center Ember.
This indicator became a new record, exceeding the result of 2023, when the share of renewable sources was 44.8% of total electricity production in the EU.
If we take into account nuclear energy as an environmentally friendly source, the share of environmentally friendly sources increases to 71%, the authors of the study note.
According to the report, over five years (since 2019) the share of fossil fuels has decreased from 39% to 29%, in particular gas – from 20% to less than 16%.
«Fossil fuels are gradually losing their dominant role in the EU's energy supply. Back in 2019, when the Green Deal initiative was launched, few could have imagined that the energy transition would happen at this pace», — said Chris Rosslow, senior energy and climate analyst at Ember.
This is the ninth report prepared by Ember. The study analyzes data on electricity production and consumption in all countries of the European Union.
