Google Pixel smartphones will remain not too powerful for another 2 generations

Google Pixel smartphones will remain not very powerful for another 2 generations

It seems that Google Pixel smartphones will not be able to even come close to the performance of devices based on the flagship Qualcomm and MediaTek SoCs for at least another two years. Reportedly, even the Pixel 11 line will not receive a powerful SoC.

What else is known

The Tensor G6 platform will be created with an emphasis on energy efficiency and minimal heating. And also increase in margin.

As a result, the Tensor G6 was originally planned with the new IMG EXT GPU, but instead this platform will have graphics IMG CXT core like Tensor G4! This, in particular, will make the G6 slightly smaller in area than the G5: 105 sq.mm versus 110 sq.mm.

Similar space savings will take place throughout the chip. For example, the DSP block will be stripped of one of its cores to save space, and the system SLC cache will be halved to 4MB.

But the processor part will not be reduced. Google experimented with many configurations and initially settled on using one large Cortex-X930 core and six Cortex-A730 cores. In comparison, the Tensor G5 is expected to have one Cortex-X4 core, five Cortex-A725 and two Cortex-A520.

All these cuts or restrictions are due to energy efficiency. Google's internal reports that got into the Internet say that the company had a completely separate financial goal for the entire Tensor project, that is, one of the reasons for creating its own SoCs was to save money. And the same report says that Google has admitted failure: it failed to achieve its initial goals. That is, Google failed to make Tensor SoCs as affordable as originally planned. The previous goal is unknown, but there is a new one – $65.

And that perfectly explains why these platforms can't compete with top solutions of competitors. It is enough that Snapdragon 8 Elite is assigned a price of 200 dollars! Probably, Google's desire to make its platforms as cheap as possible, in particular, explains the choice in favor of Samsung's technological processes. However, Tensor G5 will still be produced at TSMC facilities.
