The Pixel 5 is more committed to the upper-middle range than to compete with the iPhone, but for now it is a mobile that will not reach Spain

On the Pixel 5, Google's new smartphone, there are certainly many twists and turns. It does not bet on the most powerful processors from Qualcomm, but on a huge amount of RAM. It has two cameras, like the Pixel 4, but it goes from telephoto to ultra-wide. It is made with an aluminum body, but offers wireless charging. Oh, and it's waterproof.

At this point, to say that Google, as a mobile manufacturer, is unorthodox is to risk very little. Its Pixel are still very different from the rest of the proposals with Android and the Pixel 5 does not change this reality much.

It is a phone with a nice design because for the first time Google has achieved symmetrical frames, taking advantage of an eight megapixel front camera that only occupies a small circle in the corner of the six-inch OLED screen (with 90Hz refresh rate, like the Pixel 4XL)

The phone is supported by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 765G processor which can be considered mid-range, but Google has put 8 GB of RAM inside which should make the whole system move very smoothly. There is also a 4,000 mAh battery that can be charged wirelessly and, more interestingly, that can charge other devices that rest on the back of the phone, such as the Pixel Buds headphones.

As in previous models, Google has opted for a fingerprint reader on the back of the device as the only biometric identification system.

Better cameras

The camera is once again the protagonist in this device. It has two, like the Pixel 4, but instead of supplementing the main lens with a telephoto lens, Google has kept the main 12 megapixel lens, with a 77º angle of view and added by an ultra wide angle lens of 107º of vision. with 16 megapixel resolution.

The camera application launches new lighting models for photographs in portrait mode. It is an effect that can be applied once the photo has been taken (even in photos taken with previous models), and with which professional lighting effects can be achieved, highlighting certain facial features.

There is also better video stabilization thanks to an optical and electronic motion damping system in the sensor. Google has even created a “cinematic” mode with which to achieve the stabilizing effect of a steadycam by holding the mobile with your hands.

The Pixel 5 will go on sale in mid-October at a price of $ 699 in the North American market. Google has not yet confirmed the availability in Spain, if it arrives … but in other European countries it will be on sale for about 630 euros.

PIXEL 4A, now with 5G

In some markets (again, no news regarding Spain), Google will also put on sale a version of the Pixel 4a compatible with 5G networks. This version will have the same camera as the Pixel 5, but is priced at $ 200 lower.

There are some sacrifices, of course. Although the screen is slightly larger (6.2 inches), it has a lower resolution and there is no support for 90 Hz. It will have no wireless charging or water resistance and it will have less RAM.

Even so, and given the discount, it is an interesting offer for those who want the Pixel 5 camera at a lower price. And as a somewhat unexpected surprise, this phone maintains the traditional headphone connection, even though the Pixel 5 no longer has it.

Two new devices announced today are already available in Spain. The first is the new Chromecast, a device for TV that radically changes its philosophy compared to previous years.

The old Chromecasts functioned as a bridge between the smartphone or tablet and the TV. To choose what we wanted to see, an app was selected on the phone and then asked to start the transmission on the big screen.

Now, the Chromecast will work more like an AppleTV or Amazon FireTv. It is a completely independent device that even includes a remote control.

Google has created a new control interface for TV, GoogleTV (not to be confused with Android TV), which allows you to launch different streaming applications and search through the available content. The interface suggests series and movies based on user tastes and allows, of course, to search by voice. It costs 70 euros.

In the sound section, the new Google speaker, Nest Audio, promises to significantly improve the quality of music reproduction offered by the Google Home smart speaker and with the possibility of pairing two units to create stereo sound.

The speaker debuts a new design with curved shapes and two colors (white and charcoal). It costs 99 euros and of course offers access to the Google assistant and control of home automation devices compatible with Google Home.
