Germany will equip its Leopard 2A7A1 tanks with the Israeli active defense system Trophy

The war in Ukraine and the conflicts in the Middle East have shown that in modern warfare, an FPV drone costing $500 can destroy a tank whose price tens of millions of dollars, which makes the use of heavy armored vehicles not only senseless, but also deadly.

Defense companies are actively looking for ways to protect tanks from drones, ATGMs and ATGMs, and one of the most effective systems is the Israeli Trophy from Rafael and IAI.

The German armed forces paid attention to Trophy and decided to equip their tanks with this protection system.

What is known

The German concern KNDS (formerly KMW) demonstrated a tank Leopard 2A7A1 with the Trophy active protection complex.

The Bundeswehr ordered the modification of 18 tanks, which will be transferred to the 230th Tank Battalion for deployment in Lithuania in the summer of 2025.

It is noted that the Leopard 2A7A1 modification is an intermediate stage before the release of the new Leopard 2A8 version, in which the Trophy complex is already integrated into the tower structure. In the current model of the Leopard, the protection system is installed on top of the armor.

The principle of operation of Trophy does not allow hits on equipment, as highly sensitive sensors and radars detect a threat in advance and automatically fire small interceptor missiles that destroy flying projectiles , at a safe distance from the combat vehicle. It should be noted that at the moment the Leopard 2A7A1 version of the Trophy is not designed to fight against kamikaze drones, but it is planned that this function will appear in future models.
