Germany will order more than 100 new Leopard tanks to deter Russia

Germany plans to order 105 Leopard 2A8 tanks and will spend almost 3 billion euros on it. This is necessary as part of NATO's plan to contain Russia.

At the same time, the project still needs the approval of the parliament. The Bundeswehr expects to receive these tanks between 2027 and 2030.

The publication notes that part of the tanks will be used to equip the German brigade in Lithuania. It was created as part of NATO's plan to contain Russia.

The document notes that most of the purchase was not financed because the regular budget and special funds of 100 billion euros created after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine had there is not enough money.

Therefore, the German Ministry of Defense is requesting emergency financial authorization for this purchase.

What is known about this tank

The Leopard 2A8 is the latest modification of the German main battle tank Leopard 2.

It is equipped with modern armor plating, an improved active protection system and a more powerful engine, which greatly increases its combat effectiveness and survivability on the battlefield. The tank is equipped with an advanced fire control system and thermal imaging sights, which allows for accurate shooting in all weather conditions and at night.

The Leopard 2A8 also includes the latest communication and control technologies that ensure integration into military command network. This model is designed to perform a wide range of combat tasks, including combating enemy armored vehicles, supporting infantry and participating in asymmetric conflicts.
