Germany, Denmark and Hungary have agreed on the joint procurement of Skyranger air defense systems

Germany, Denmark and Hungary have signed a memorandum of intent in Paris on the joint procurement of the Skyranger air defense tower system within the framework of the European Sky Shield initiative – ESSI.

According to Ukrinform, this was announced by the Ministry of Defense of the Federal Republic of Germany on the X social network.

The signing of the protocol took place during the Eurosatory exhibition.

Skyrangers of medium and short range will be purchased from the German company Rheinmetall. The first prototype is planned to be sent to the Bundeswehr at the end of this year.

It is noted that the turret system can be flexibly integrated on different platforms, for example, in the Boxer infantry vehicle. This is exactly what Germany plans to do. Instead, Hungary wants the Skyranger based on its new Lynx infantry fighting vehicle, and Denmark wants the Piranha wheeled tank, despite ongoing problems with supplier country Switzerland, which has banned Denmark from exporting Piranha to Ukraine.

As reported, the Rheinmetal company announced its intention to transfer the Skyranger based on the Leopard 1 main battle tank to Ukraine.

At the exhibition in Paris, Rheinmetall demonstrated the Skyranger 35 turret on the chassis of the Leopard 2 tank as a tactical anti-aircraft system. Lynx KF41 Skyranger 30 and anti-aircraft wheeled tank Boxer Skyranger 30 are also presented for the first time.

Skyranger 30 — the short-range air defense tower system, developed by Rheinmetall Air Defense AG, was presented for the first time in March 2021. Its task is to provide ground units with a mobile system capable of striking aircraft, drones, airborne munitions, and cruise missiles.

Sky Shield, initiated by Germany in August 2022 against the background of a full-scale war by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, is a project to develop a ground-based integrated air defense system in Europe, which includes means of combating ballistic missiles. As of now, 22 states have joined the initiative.

Eurosatory – the largest international exhibition of ground and surface-to-air defense and security, held every two years at the Paris-Nord Villepinte exhibition center, Paris, France. This year it takes place on June 17-21.
