German mobile operators have been ordered to remove Chinese components from 5G network equipment

In order to ensure national security, Germany has ordered its mobile operators to remove from their domestic 5G networks all Chinese components, including Chinese-made ones telecommunications companies Huawei and ZTE.

The equipment of Huawei and ZTE, along with other Chinese telecommunications companies, has long faced accusations that they can engage in espionage, use network vulnerabilities to install malware and viruses.

According to an Argentine defense expert and International Relations Luis Somos, 5G networks are a dual tool that serves to facilitate communications but are also used by China as intelligence mechanisms.

Components produced by Chinese companies will be banned for use in 5G networks by the end of 2026 and must be completely replaced no later than 2029. “We are protecting Germany's central nervous system as a places of business, and we protect the communications of citizens, companies and the state”, — German Interior Minister Nancy Feser said earlier in the summer.

Scandinavian electronics manufacturers Ericsson and Nokia — vendors that represent the only major alternatives to 5G network equipment, — have repeatedly emphasized the risks and the permanent presence of Huawei in some of the largest European countries.

Distrust in the networks of Chinese companies has grown in recent years. In 2019 for example, the Dutch General Intelligence and Security Service advised the government not to use this technology after discovering Chinese and Russian digital espionage attempts.
