Germany must strengthen its defenses against cyber attacks and disinformation campaigns, especially from Russia, as the country prepares for snap elections in the coming months.

Interior Minister Nancy Feser warned on Tuesday, November 12, Reuters reports.

"We must protect our democracy in the digital world, too", – Feser said after the publication of the Federal Office for Information Security's annual report.

“We must arm ourselves against threats from hacking, manipulation and disinformation. These hybrid threats primarily come from [President Vladimir] Putin's regime in Russia, but also from other actors,” Feser added, vowing to step up security measures.

Germany is set to hold parliamentary elections early next year after Social Democrat Olaf Scholz's three-party coalition fell apart amid an economic downturn and rising support for populist politicians.

The agency's report noted that there were no significant cybersecurity incidents when the country held state and EU elections in 2024. However, monitoring of the cybersecurity situation continues, taking into account the situation developing before the upcoming national elections, the document says.
