German developers presented the latest laser weapon that can destroy drones and mortars

German defense technology startups Rheinmetall and MBDA Deutschland have successfully completed testing of a new laser weapon that can destroy drones, military vehicles , jet skis and mortars. This is stated on the official website of the developers.

The laser system is designed to protect ships from drones and other threats, and it is currently being tested on the frigate of the German Navy "Saxony". The first results showed impressive performance, so the companies plan to bring the product to market within the next five to six years.

During tests, the laser successfully hit more than 100 different targets, including highly maneuverable DJI Phantom drones and Wolf military vehicles. The system has shown the ability to work in various weather conditions, providing high accuracy and low visibility. The MBDA company was responsible for the target capture and tracking system, and Rheinmetall — for a laser emitter and its integration on a frigate.

The project became part of the overall strategy for the development of laser weapons in the world. For example, the US Navy is already equipping its ships with similar systems, which increases the level of self-defense of the fleet. France is also testing laser technologies, in particular for safe satellite communication.
