Georgia's ruling party is initiating a new law on media outlets that would restrict their funding from foreign sources. The bill will be based on British law and will establish standards of objectivity and journalistic ethics.
“Georgian Dream” is initiating the adoption of a “law on media outlets” that would restrict funding from foreign sources. This was stated by the party's executive secretary Mamuka Mdinaradze, reports UNN with reference to “News of Georgia”.
According to him, the restrictions will not apply to advertising revenues, and the law itself will be developed on the basis of British legislation.
The law will establish standards of media objectivity, as well as journalistic ethics. Institutional mechanisms for monitoring and ensuring compliance with these standards will be determined
– said Mdinaradze.
He reported that “Georgian Dream” will begin preparing a bill literally tomorrow.
At the same time, “Georgian Dream” plans to replace the current law on transparency of foreign influence with a stricter version — an analogue of the American FARA.
