Georgia: High School Shooting Leaves Four Dead

Georgia law enforcement officers responded to a shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder on Wednesday, September 4. Four people were killed in the incident, a police officer said.

County police also reported several injuries, Reuters reported.

The Barrow County Sheriff's Office said in a statement that a suspect was in custody.

A school district spokesman said the situation appeared to be under control.

ABC News quoted witness Sergio Caldera, 17, as saying he was in chemistry class when he heard gunshots. Caldera said his teacher opened the door and another teacher ran into the classroom and told him to close the door to protect himself from the gunfire.

As students and teachers crowded into the room, someone knocked on his classroom door and repeatedly demanded that he open it. When the knocking stopped, Caldera heard more gunshots and screams. He said the students were later evacuated to the school football field.

Live footage shows ambulances outside the school building.

A CNN reporter says one of the patients was loaded into a medical helicopter that landed outside the school.

"At approximately 10:23 a.m., multiple law enforcement agencies, fire and EMS personnel were dispatched to the high school for reports of an active shooter," local police reported.

The FBI's Atlanta office sent agents to the school to support police officers.

The White House statement noted that US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the incident and that “his administration will continue to coordinate with federal, state, and local officials as additional information becomes available.”
