Geneva may become the center of Russian espionage in Europe. The Swiss Federal Intelligence Service believes that there are already several dozen Russian spies in the city.

This was reported in a report of the agency.

"Recently, various European states have expelled officers of Russian intelligence, which could lead to the fact that Russian services deploy their forces in states such as Switzerland, which did not carry out any expulsions, – the document says.

At the same time, the head of the intelligence agency Christian Dusset, in an interview with  Tages-Anzeiger confirmed that Geneva is the center of Russian espionage activity.

"We know that there are several dozen agents operating here who hold positions in Russian diplomatic and consular missions" ;, – he said.

According to Swiss intelligence, espionage activity in Geneva is due to the fact that there are important international organizations, diplomatic missions, think tanks, a researcher financial institutions and transnational corporations, including commodity traders and companies providing financial and other services. All these organizations produce a large amount of information that is important for intelligence agencies.

In addition, Geneva regularly hosts a large number of international summits and conferences, being a venue for interstate negotiations and consultations. Spies under the guise of diplomats can participate in negotiations and exert direct influence on them, according to Swiss intelligence.
