Gauff is the first US Open semi-finalist and may face Mucha

New York – If tennis player Karolína Muchová advances to the US Open semifinals, she will face American Cori Gauff. The tournament's number six defeated the Latvian and seeded twenty-seeded Jelena Ostapenko 6:0, 6:2 and advanced to the top four for the first time on New York concrete. Muchová's match with Romanian Sorana Cirstea will start on Arthur Ashe's biggest court at 1:00 CEST.

Nineteen-year-old Gauffova eliminated Ostapenko in 69 minutes and scored her 16th victory in the last 17 matches. The finalist of last year's Roland Garros triumphed before the final Grand Slam of the season at tournaments in Washington and Cincinnati. In Cincinnati, she defeated Muchová in the final.

“It's a great feeling. Last year I lost here in the quarterfinals and this time I wanted to be better,” Gauff said in an interview on the court. “I was cautious throughout the match. Even at match points, I was still not sure of victory. I know very well that Jelena can come back from any situation,” she added.

26-year-old Ostapenko, who knocked out defending champion Polka in the round of 16 Iga Šwiateková and ended her reign at the top of the world rankings, paying for 36 unforced errors. Gauff only had 14.

“As they say in basketball, defense wins games. I added quality offense today and that made the difference,” added Gauff, who is the youngest American in the US Open semifinals since Serena Williams in 2001.
