The leader of the Conservative Party of Quebec (PCQ), Éric Duhaime, invites Prime Minister François Legault to take inspiration from his Manitoba counterpart, Web Kinew, who has just suspended the provincial tax on gasoline. p>

This measure, according to him, would allow Quebec households to start the year better, while 2023 has been extremely difficult financially.

Mr. Duhaime – who summoned the press on Wednesday in the company of his party's energy spokesperson – presented his proposal as neither left nor right, emphasizing that it had been implemented in Manitoba by the New Democratic Party (NDP), which he compared to Québec solidaire.

If a left-wing government is capable of doing it, I think that even Mr. Legault would be capable of doing it.

This is not the first time that Quebec conservatives have suggested that the Legault government suspend its 19.2-cent gas tax. But the entry into force of a similar measure in Manitoba on January 1, by his own admission, convinced Mr. Dumaine to return to the charge with such a proposal on Wednesday.

The Quebec tax of 19.2 cents is just one of many government taxes to be imposed on gasoline in Quebec. The others come under Ottawa.

In Manitoba, the provincial tax on gasoline is 14 cents.

Its suspension 10 days ago had an immediate effect on the price at the pump, argued Éric Duhaime on Wednesday. In Winnipeg, some gas stations were selling gasoline for less than $1/liter on Wednesday morning, according to the website, while in Quebec, the same volume of gasoline was trading in average around $1.60.

Conservative energy spokesperson Marie-Josée Élie also pleaded in favor of suspending the provincial gas tax on Wednesday morning, arguing that Quebecers were already carrying a particularly heavy tax burden.

The PCQ estimated in its 2022 financial framework that the suspension of the provincial gas tax would generate a loss of revenue of $792 million. He estimates today that this shortfall would still be around 800 million.

The sums collected thanks to the provincial tax on ;gasoline are currently used to finance the MTQ Land Transportation Network Fund. by Éric Duhaime, due to the fact that electric vehicles do not contribute to this and that the sale of new gasoline vehicles should normally be banned from 2035.
