Whether Sansa, Daenerys, Cersei, Theon, Brienne, Vère … many characters have been raped or been victims of attempted rape on screen. A heavy subject which frustrated many fans and which surprised George RR Martin, the author of the novels from which the series was adapted.
A mysteriously added rape scene
During an interview with EW, the writer has indeed confessed that it is the creators of Game of Thrones who have sometimes made the decision to add such shocking sequences. So, while everyone remembers the scene where Drogo rapes Daenerys on their wedding night, George RR Martin recalled that this scene did not exist in his book, nor in the very first version of the pilot who did. has never aired on HBO.
” In Emilia Clarke's version, it's rape. But that's not the case in my novel, and it wasn't the case in the scene we filmed with Tamzin Merchant [the actress who was initially chosen to play Daenerys before being replaced, editor's note]. It was a moment of seduction “said the author.
According to him, the creators of the series simply missed the relationship that was developing between the two characters, ” Dany and Drogo do not have the same language. She is a little scared, but at the same time a little excited. And Drogo is much more considerate. The only words he knows are 'yes' or 'no'. And basically this scene had to be true to this version . ”
George RR Martin hasn't revealed why the creators have changed direction in the meantime, but his words shouldn't reconcile critics with Game of Thrones dads.
