Future iPhone models may have interchangeable back panels with different functions

Sometimes you can find out what Apple is up to by looking at its latest patent applications. Remember that filing a patent application does not necessarily mean that Apple plans to use the invention or innovation protected by the patent if it is granted. According to Apple patent experts, the company has applied for a patent for an interesting concept that would allow iPhone users to replace the back panel of their phone with a panel with various functions.

For example, using magnets that allow MagSafe accessories to attach to iPhone 12 or later models, as well as additional magnets, an iPhone user will be able to remove the current back panel of their iOS device and replace it with a back panel that may have better speakers or even a sensor that allows diabetics to insert a test strip with a drop of blood and see the latest blood sugar readings. As stated in Apple's patent application, “an additional subsystem may be a device for testing blood sugar levels and may include a mechanism for obtaining blood samples (e.g., on paper test strips) and related analysis components and circuitry for determining blood glucose levels based on the test strip. ”

If the removable rear panel contains additional cameras, such panel may include a “lens, image sensor and appropriate electronics to enable image capture.” Another interesting possibility is an optional rear a touchscreen display panel with a high-quality color display or a low-resolution monochrome display.

As we said, filing an application with the USPTO does not necessarily mean that a patent will be granted. Apple received 2,536 US patents last year, up from 676 in 2011.
