Nicholas lived with his wife Maria in a 3-room apartment in a stuffy city.
They had no children of their own. That's why they lived together their whole lives. They would have continued to live like this, if not for one terrible day. That day Maria went to buy bread and never came back. She felt bad outside. She fell down dead.
People walked past the old woman. She lay there for a long time until a young man appeared. He immediately called for help. A car arrived quickly, but it was too late to save Maria.
If people had been so kind as to call in time, she wouldn't have bled to death. Nicholas found out about it later. And then his eyes filled with sadness. He doesn't remember much of what happened after his wife died. The young man was Andrzej. When they met, he often visited the elderly man. When Nicholas found out that Andrzej, his wife, and two daughters lived in a rented apartment, he suggested that he move in.
The apartment is big, there's enough room for everyone. Grandpa won't live alone. At first, Andrzej was hesitant whether his relatives would object. But when he found out that Nicholas had no family, he agreed to move in. It really is better, it's more fun together. And much better than in a rented apartment.
Now he pays the utility bills himself, he doesn't let the old man do the same. Now his pension is enough not only for medicines, but also for savings for Andrzej's children. At first, Grandpa would cook dinner when everyone came home. The girls come home from school early. They eat dinner and sit in the room with their step-grandfather.
He tells them a lot of interesting things. Then they do their homework together. In general, the curriculum at school is not what it used to be. One day, Grandpa didn't come out of his room. Sometimes, even if he didn't come out, you could hear him bustling around. And now it was quiet.
Andrzej looked into the senior's room and froze. Mikołaj had died. After the police came, they searched his things in the room. The girls looked in the box. At the very bottom, under the speeches, were four envelopes. Each had a name on it. One envelope for Andrzej, one for his wife, and two for the girls, each in a separate envelope.
They also found his will, in which Mikołaj left his entire fortune to Andrzej. Only now did they realize how short life was and how much Mikołaj loved them.
Since then, their family has become close. They talk to each other a lot. The daughters have started telling their parents about their lives at school, their classmates, and their friends. Before, neither their father nor their mother had been interested in their lives. Everyone told it all only to his grandfather.
