It all started when my mother invited me to the notary's office.

From real life. "I was accused by my siblings of manipulating my mother": She left me her apartment

When my mother left me her apartment, I never thought it would become the beginning of a family war. I had only one thought: I wanted to provide her with peace and security in the last years of her life. I was the one who took care of her every day, took her to the doctors, cooked for her, and spent time with her. But what was supposed to be a gesture of gratitude was perceived by my siblings as a betrayal.

It all started when my mother invited me to the notary's office. She said she wanted to leave me the apartment so that after her death I could live there peacefully and not have to worry about the formalities.

– „Ania, you were always there for me. You deserve it. Your brother and sister have their own homes, their own lives. And you… you have always been my support.”

I was moved, but also full of fear. I knew that such decisions could cause tensions in the family, but my mother was firm. She signed the documents, and I promised to take care of her as best I could.

The real drama began when a few months later my sister, Kasia, accidentally found out about this decision. She called me, her voice full of anger.

– „How could you do that, Anka? How could you manipulate mom into signing over the apartment? to you!”

– „Kasia, it wasn't like that. Mom made that decision herself. I never forced her to do anything.”

But Kasia wouldn't listen to me. The next day, my brother, Tomek, joined her. We all met at Mom's house, and the atmosphere was tense from the first minutes.

– „You think you can take everything for yourself?– Tomek began. – „This apartment belongs to all of us. Mom had no right to leave it just to you!”

– „Tomek, please calm down. I didn't take anything. Mom wanted to do that because she knew I was the one taking care of her.”

Kasia looked at me with contempt.

– „Just because you take care of her doesn't mean you have the right to everything. You manipulate her, and we see it.”

Their words were like blows. I tried to explain, to explain that I never wanted to hurt them, but they were adamant. They accused me of taking advantage of Mom's trust, of being driven by greed. Mom tried to calm them down, but her words meant nothing to them either.

& “It was my decision,” she said, looking at them with pain. & “Ania never forced me to do anything. I just wanted to thank her for everything she does for me.”

But that wasn't enough to calm their anger. Kasia and Tomek cut off contact with me. They avoided me at family gatherings, and when my mother died, they didn't even come to my wake. Their coldness hurt me more than any words.

Years have passed, and our relationship is still strained. Kasia and Tomek can't forget that decision, and I still live with the burden of accusations. I know my mother meant well, but her gesture divided our family.

I pass by this apartment every day, remembering how much pain and loss it brought. I understood that sometimes decisions made with love can cause the greatest conflicts. And I, although I was supposed to be the one who gained the most, ended up being the one who lost my family.
