I had no idea that that day I would hear something that would destroy all the joy.

From real life. "During the birthday party, my mother-in-law's granddaughter announced that she intended to live with us permanently": Without asking for our consent

The birthday of our son, Antoś, was supposed to be a joyful celebration. I prepared everything with the greatest care – balloons, cake, presents. The house was filled with children's laughter and adults' conversations. The guests, including my mother-in-law, had a great time, and I felt satisfied that we had managed to create such a warm atmosphere.

I had no idea that that day I would hear something that would destroy all the joy.

Towards the end of the reception, when everyone had sat down at the table for coffee and dessert, my mother-in-law, Mrs. Krystyna, stood up, tapping her spoon against her cup to get everyone's attention. Her expression was serious, and her eyes sparkled with determination.

– „Dear ones, I wanted to make an announcement.” – she began, looking at me and my husband, Kamil. – „I've decided to move in with you. I think it's best for all of us.”

The words hung in the air, and surprise was written all over the faces of the gathered guests. I felt as if someone had poured a bucket of icy water over me. I looked at Kamil, who sat as if paralyzed, not knowing what to say.

– „Mom, how do you mean – you'll live with us? We haven't talked about it.” – he said finally, trying to stay calm.

Mother-in-law raised an eyebrow, as if she was surprised by his reaction.

– „Kamilu, I live alone in a big house that's too big and too empty for me. Why should I suffer when I can be with you? Ania is at home with the kids anyway, so she could help me, and I could support you in raising Antoś.”

I could feel the blood pounding in my temples. I couldn't believe my mother-in-law had decided to announce such a decision publicly, without talking to us first. I tried to calm down before speaking with a slight smile, although inside I was boiling with anger.

„Mrs. Krystyna, I understand that living in a big house can be difficult, but a decision like this requires a conversation and preparation. It's a big change for all of us.”

Her response was quick and firm.

– „Ania, it's obvious that I'll be best off with you. Why all this formality? Kamil's house is also my home, right? What's best for the family should be the most important.”

Her words were like a blow. The house that my husband and I had been building, that had been our space, was suddenly going to become something we had no control over.

After that announcement, the atmosphere at the party changed. The guests avoided our gaze, and I felt like everyone was looking at me, waiting to see what I would do. I didn't want to start an argument in front of the kids, so I decided to wait until the guests had left.

In the evening, when the house was empty and Antoś had fallen asleep, Kamil and I sat in the living room. I couldn't stay silent any longer.

– „Kamil, your mom really thinks she can just move in with us? She didn't even ask us for our opinion!”

He sighed heavily, rubbing his face with his hands.

– „I know, Ania. It was as surprising to me as it was to you. But what should I do? She's my mother.”

– „Your mother, but this is our life! We can't let someone else make decisions like this for us.”

We talked for a long time, trying to find a solution. Kamil promised to talk to his mother-in-law, but I knew it wouldn't be an easy conversation. Mrs. Krystyna has always had a strong character and rarely accepted opposition.

The next day Kamil met with her alone. He returned late in the evening, clearly tired.

– „And what did she say?” – I asked, although I was afraid of the answer.

– „She wasn't happy. She said that I felt responsible for her, because she raised me and devoted her life to the family. But in the end she agreed to stay in her house. Although… she said that we would talk about it later.”

I knew that the subject was not closed. My mother-in-law still believed that she had the right to make such decisions for us. Since then, our relationship has become colder, and each visit from Mrs. Krystyna was full of tension.

Today I know that boundaries are key in a family. Love and respect for loved ones do not mean agreeing to everything. Being a family is also the ability to say „no– even when it hurts.
