Dorota was a 52-year-old woman who was very young at heart.
Although she was in her fifties, she didn't consider herself an old woman – not that she had much time to think about it, since she had to work three jobs to support her family. Her husband, August, gradually became a financial burden after losing his job more than two decades ago.
At first, he spent all his time unsuccessfully searching for a new job, but after a while he stopped looking. August gradually got used to a dependent life without any responsibilities, and gradually his hobby became lying on the couch in front of the TV, drinking beer and eating chips.
His body changed first, and then everything else. He was fed and clothed, even though he no longer worked, which was a dream come true for a man who had always been lazy. Thanks to Dorota's many jobs, he had enough to get by, but he didn't seem to notice how hard she worked.
They married early because she was pregnant with their daughter Kasia. Of course, there would be consequences if they didn't marry, but their love made it an easy, even natural decision. Their daughter, like them, married early and had a child who grew up without a father, since he and Kasia were divorced. Left alone with a child and unable to work because of the minor child, she turned to her mother for help.
Being a reliable mother, Dorota decided to help her financially by giving Kasia a regular allowance to support herself and her child. The regular allowance never changed, which made Kasia happy to find her own source of income. She stopped looking for suitable employment and relied solely on the allowance she received.
This went on for a long time, until one day Dorota had a painful realization. It was a day like any other: she left home early and went to a café. After entering, she joined a three-person queue and waited patiently for her turn, checking her watch. “Grzegorz will eat me alive if I'm late today,” she thought to herself.
Her boss knew how many jobs she worked and usually gave her a break, but she knew she was out of luck today. As she tapped her feet impatiently, a few teenagers brazenly entered the cafe and cut in line when it was her turn. The cashier, a young man with a bored expression on his face, said nothing and simply began serving them.
Dorota couldn't believe her eyes. She pointed out to the cashier that the kids had squeezed in ahead of her, but he said they were just kids. The boys started calling her a pensioner and told her to go home under a wool blanket. Dorota had never seen such unruly children before, and it shocked her, but not as much as what they were saying.
“This has to stop,” she told herself. The first thing she did was call her daughter to inform her of her decision to cancel the girl's life financing. She hung up and went in search of a beauty salon, where she dyed her hair, then ordered a trendy haircut, manicure, and many other services.
She turned off her phone to enjoy what was a new experience for her, then went to the mall and bought herself a few nice dresses, one of which she decided to keep on and wear home. When she got home, her husband, who had received a call from her boss that had been forwarded to their landline, asked where she had been.
He angrily informed her that two bosses had been looking for her because she had not shown up for work. When he turned around and saw his wife in this new guise, he choked on his chips and instead of praising her, he started scolding her for how much money she wasted buying all those nice things.
“I'm tired of cleaning up after you, August, I want a divorce. And you, Kasia, start looking for a job, because that's the end of your pocket money,” she said. The man was shocked. He couldn't understand why she had suddenly turned against them, but Dorota wouldn't back down.
“For the past two decades, I've carried the financial burden of this family. But now I'm tired and I'd like to put that energy into myself,” she said with tears in her eyes. It was like admitting defeat, but what choice did she have? Those she fought for had long since given up.
