After the funeral, the formalities related to the division of property began.

From real life. "After my father passed away, I found out that he had a second family": He wants to inherit the entire estate

My father's death was a blow that no one expected. He was not only a parent to me, but also a mentor – a man who always knew how to solve every problem, how to support me, how to love me unconditionally. His passing left a void that nothing could fill. But what I discovered a few days later shattered my idea of him and our family.

After the funeral, the formalities of dividing the estate began. My father left the house, the plot of land, and the business he had run for most of his life. I was convinced that everything would be divided between me, my mother, and my brother. However, the notary had some unexpected information for us.

– “Before we get to the will, I need to inform you that two more people have come forward with claims to the estate.”

Mom looked at him, confused.

– “What two people? What are you talking about?”

The notary took a deep breath.

– „Mrs. Aleksandra and her son, Jan, claim that they are also the deceased's family and that they have the right to the inheritance.”

The silence in the room was deafening. I looked at my mother, who had turned pale, as if she was about to faint. My brother tried to say something, but his voice got stuck in his throat. I felt the world around me begin to fall apart.

When the emotions had died down a bit, I decided to find out more. I met with a notary, and then with Aleksandra herself, a woman who claimed to have been my father's second wife.

She was a middle-aged woman, well-groomed, but there was something in her gaze that irritated me – a self-confidence that I couldn't stand. She introduced herself calmly, as if the whole situation was completely natural to her.

& bdquo;Your father and I have been together for over twenty years, & ndash; she said, looking me straight in the eye. & ndash; & bdquo; He once promised to take care of me and our son. I expect nothing more than for that promise to be fulfilled.”

The words of „our son” were like a punch to the heart. Jan, a boy my brother's age, sat next to her, avoiding my gaze. In that instant, I knew I had been living a lie my whole life. My father, the man I admired, had a second family – a family that now wanted to take away everything he had built.

– „My father was an honest man. I can't believe he would do something like that.”

Aleksandra smiled sadly.

– „Maybe he was honest in your eyes. But we were a part of his life, whether you like it or not.”

I couldn't stop thinking about her words as I drove home. How could he deceive us like that? How could he lead a double life for so many years? I tried to talk to my mother, but she was too broken to talk. My brother wanted to fight it in court, but I still didn't know what we should do.

A few weeks later, after many tense meetings with lawyers, it was determined that Aleksandra and Jan were entitled to a share of the estate. Our family was torn apart. My mother stopped talking about my father, as if she wanted to erase him from her memory. My brother stopped visiting home, and I felt that everything I knew had been destroyed.

Today, even though several years have passed, the wounds have not completely healed. However, I have learned that the truth, although painful, is better than living in illusion. My father left chaos behind, but also a lesson: every secret, sooner or later, comes to light. Now I try to build my life on the foundations of honesty and trust – something that was missing in the family that I loved so much.
