Forget folds: Samsung may release a foldable phone

We are in the midst of a competitive battle in the premium smartphone market, where companies like Samsung, Google, Huawei and others , competing for the most attractive design of foldable phones. And Samsung is rumored to be working on a revolutionary device with a moving screen that will bring the technology of the future right into your pockets.

Samsung is reportedly planning to bring its Rollable Flex OLED concept, which was unveiled in 2023, to the mass market. According to the Korean publication The Elec, this smartphone will look like a regular monoblock, but will be able to expand to an impressive 12.4-inch screen — a size comparable to the iPad Pro, but in a compact case that fits easily in your pocket (at least if you're wearing men's pants).

The release of this innovative device is scheduled for the second half of 2025, when it is also expected launch of the new Galaxy Z7 Fold and Z7 Flip models. One of its key features — the camera under the screen, which Samsung has already implemented in the Z series.

Although foldable phones have been on the market for more than five years, they still occupy a small share due to their high cost (often exceeding $2,000) and user doubts about their durability. Rumors suggest that Samsung is unhappy with the sales of the Galaxy Z6 and S24 series, partly due to the high price tag, which can be equivalent to a month's rent.

However, Samsung continues to be a leader in the high-end smartphone segment, competing with Apple and other market players. For example, Google with its Pixel 9 Pro Fold offers a thinner design, while Huawei hits the market with its Mate XT with a screen that folds three times and reaches 10.2 inches.

Samsung aims to create an ambitious new device that will attract attention to the brand and will help increase sales of low-cost models, where the main profits are concentrated.

However, developing such an innovative product is a difficult task. A phone with an unfolded screen will require serious engineering solutions, especially in matters of battery, which must ensure the operation of a display the size of a tablet in a compact body. Difficulties with batteries — one of the main problems Samsung has faced with its previous complex models.

Even if these rumors are true, Samsung may face challenges that will cause the project to be delayed or even canceled. However, the very idea of such a device — the phone, which unfolds into a screen the size of a laptop, looks extremely attractive. I hope that Samsung will be able to implement this idea.
