For using the phone in prison: in Japan, a cyclist can now be imprisoned

A new law has been introduced in Japan for cyclists. From now on, if they use mobile phones while driving, they can be imprisoned for six months.

The punishment can be less severe – a fine of $655. The BBC writes about it.

The National Police Agency reports that in 2024, there were more than 49,000 accidents resulting in the injury or death of cyclists up to September. Of these, 126 are “distractions while riding a bicycle”. The number has only grown over the past few years.

In addition to restricting phone use, the new rules also target cyclists who ride under the influence of alcohol. They face up to three years in prison or a fine of 500,000 yen (over 135,000 hryvnias).

A few hours after the new laws came into force, Osaka authorities confirmed on Friday that they had already recorded five violations, including two men caught cycling drunk. One of the men collided with another cyclist, but no one was injured.

Last year, the authorities required cyclists to wear helmets. In May, the Japanese parliament adopted a bill that allows the police to fine cyclists for traffic violations.
