For the first time in Southeast Asia: Thailand legalized same-sex marriage

Thailand's King Maha Vajiralongkorn on Tuesday, September 24, signed a law that legalized same-sex marriage in the country. This is the first such case in Southeast Asia.

On Tuesday, the law was published in the Royal Gazette and will come into force on January 22 next year. This is reported by the BBC.

The draft law was approved in the parliament back in June, but the signature of the king of the country was required. The law will enter into force on January 22, 2025. Activists have already called it a “historic” development for Thailand.

The law replaces “husband” and “wife” with gender-neutral terms, and gives couples equal rights to adopt and inherit.

LGBTQ+ activist and Bangkok Pride co-founder Anna Chumaporn has already told the BBC that on January 22, when the law comes into force, she plans to organize a mass wedding of more than 1,000 LGBTQ+ couples .
