In the sky over New Zealand, scientists noticed an unusual atmospheric phenomenon – a red arc.
The arc appeared in the sky during the southern polar lights. According to the Express, scientists thought it was possible, but now they have evidence.
New Zealand scientist Ian Griffin noticed the red arc. Physicists called this phenomenon “the red arc of the aurora”, and for the first time the existence of this phenomenon was confirmed through observations.
“Something unusual was happening in the sky and I decided to photograph it. Such a red arc has never been observed before, and now we have the opportunity to get more information about the processes that occur as a result of the interaction of solar particles with the Earth's magnetosphere,” Griffin said.
Scientists said that the red arc then turned into a thin blue-white arc. This phenomenon is called a strong increase in the speed of thermal radiation.
