For “green” energy: an advanced battery will replace the old coal-fired power plant

1.5 MW sodium-sulfur battery system can store renewable energy for up to six hours.

In Australia, Queensland power producer CleanCo Queensland is launching a pilot of the country's largest grid-connected sodium-sulfur (NAS) battery long-life energy storage (BESS) system. This is reported in a press release from CleanCo.

It is reported that the advanced sodium-sulfur battery technology, developed by Allset Energy, will expand CleanCo's ability to provide stable, low-emission energy and support the state's transition to renewable energy. Thanks to its modular design, the battery can be expanded to gigawatt scale.

According to the company, the 1.5 MW NAS battery at Swanbank will provide at least six hours of “green” energy storage. It will be one of the first in Queensland and the largest grid-connected sodium-sulfur battery in Australia.

“This battery represents an exciting step forward in CleanCo's mission to move Queensland towards zero emissions,” — said CEO Tom Metcalfe.

CleanCo intends to deploy a pilot project at the site of one of the decommissioned coal-fired power stations at Swanbank. The location is ideal for the NAS, given its proximity to Queensland's largest energy consumer.
